Never, has there been an author/poet, like Edgar Allen Poe. His stories and poems focus around a constant in his life, which is death. The experiences he's had in life, with loves ones dying, are the source of his creative writing.
A prime example of his works, is the short story, "The Black Cat." The story revolves around a man, who has an incredible love for pets, ever since he was a child. He marries, and his wife shares the same love for pets too, and get many pets. Then, his love for pets is turned into cruelty, as a result of alcohol. One pet in particular, a black cat, is spared by his cruelty. Then one night in his drunken-stupor, he sees the black cat, and it bites him, so he gouges the cat's eye. The next morning, he woke up and hung the cat. Then one night, his house burns down. At the site of the burned house, he sees something burned into the wall, that's in the shape of a cat. So next, the couple moved into an apartment. At the apartment, they find a cat that is almost exactly like the cat that they used to have. This cat drives the man crazy, so one day he grabs an axe, swings at the cat, and misses because his wife stops him. So he just kills her('cause he's gangsta), puts her body in the wall, and the cat doesn't come around anymore. The police then come, and search the place, and hear a loud scream coming from within the wall. They pull the wall down, and find the wife's corpse, and the black cat right on top of her.
"Full thought became my sole intimates-the darkest and most evil thoughts," is a line representative of the story, because it shows the evil side within him, that drives him to kill.(Pg. 14)
The main character of the story, is a man, his name is not said, because the story is told from a first person perspective. There is no physical description of the main character in the story. However, the emotional status of the man is clearly seen throughout the story. At first, he is a normal guy, with a wife, and an assortment of pets. His drinking habits make him violent, then when his house burned down, and he had no money, his character changed from good to evil. A line that is represents the character," The moodiness of my usual temper increased to hatred of all things and of all mankind: while from the sudden, frequent, and ungovernable outbursts of a fury to which I now blindly abandoned myself, my uncomplaining wife, alas! was the most usual and the most patient of sufferers."(Pg. 14) This line shows that the character is moody, and unstable.
If I were to make this story into a movie, I would choose Samuel L. Jackson as the main character, and Garfield as the cat. The wife would most definitely have to be Jessica Alba. I would take out the ending, and save it as part of the sequel. Parts I would add, are sub-plots, and more characters. Samuel L Jackson would be a good person to play the guy, because he can swear really good.
