Today in History

Today in history class, we talked about The Great Powers of 1871-1900. The Great Powers consisted of 8 countries-Germany, France, Great Britain, Austria-Hungary, Russia, China, Japan, and the United States. The Great Powers were great, because they each had major influence on different parts of the world at that time, and they all had many achievements. Germany at the time was centered in Europe, and they also had the most powerful army at the time. France had a small army, but it's people were well educated. Austria-Hungary was divided socially and ethnically, and they pissed off the Russians by trying to dominate the Balkans. Russia, like Austria Hungary, was ethnically diverse and divided, and had many internal problems. China resisted western influence, which made them weaker, and were taken over by the British. Japan knew a guy named Matthew Perry, and defeat many countries, even though they are a small chain of islands.

A Word That Defines Me

A word that defines me is, seeker. Seeker defines me, because I'm constantly seeking many things in life, such as answers, truth, people, opportunities, and many other things. The definition of seeker, according to Dictionary.com, is-"a person or thing that seeks." I like this word, because the word can conjure up many ideas, and my own definition of seeker, " Something that I am." Which actually makes this blog's title all wrong, it should be-A Word That I Define.

Today in Math

Today in math, we discussed trigonometric ratios. Pretty simple actually, all you have to really do is remember a simple acronym-SOHCAHTOA. It stands for: Sine=Opposite/Hypotenuse, Cosine=Adjacent/Hypotenuse, and Tangent=Opposite/Adjacent. I don't really know what they're used for, but I know they have something to do with right triangles.

Black Cat Reader Response

Never, has there been an author/poet, like Edgar Allen Poe. His stories and poems focus around a constant in his life, which is death. The experiences he's had in life, with loves ones dying, are the source of his creative writing.
A prime example of his works, is the short story, "The Black Cat." The story revolves around a man, who has an incredible love for pets, ever since he was a child. He marries, and his wife shares the same love for pets too, and get many pets. Then, his love for pets is turned into cruelty, as a result of alcohol. One pet in particular, a black cat, is spared by his cruelty. Then one night in his drunken-stupor, he sees the black cat, and it bites him, so he gouges the cat's eye. The next morning, he woke up and hung the cat. Then one night, his house burns down. At the site of the burned house, he sees something burned into the wall, that's in the shape of a cat. So next, the couple moved into an apartment. At the apartment, they find a cat that is almost exactly like the cat that they used to have. This cat drives the man crazy, so one day he grabs an axe, swings at the cat, and misses because his wife stops him. So he just kills her('cause he's gangsta), puts her body in the wall, and the cat doesn't come around anymore. The police then come, and search the place, and hear a loud scream coming from within the wall. They pull the wall down, and find the wife's corpse, and the black cat right on top of her.
"Full thought became my sole intimates-the darkest and most evil thoughts," is a line representative of the story, because it shows the evil side within him, that drives him to kill.(Pg. 14)
The main character of the story, is a man, his name is not said, because the story is told from a first person perspective. There is no physical description of the main character in the story. However, the emotional status of the man is clearly seen throughout the story. At first, he is a normal guy, with a wife, and an assortment of pets. His drinking habits make him violent, then when his house burned down, and he had no money, his character changed from good to evil. A line that is represents the character," The moodiness of my usual temper increased to hatred of all things and of all mankind: while from the sudden, frequent, and ungovernable outbursts of a fury to which I now blindly abandoned myself, my uncomplaining wife, alas! was the most usual and the most patient of sufferers."(Pg. 14) This line shows that the character is moody, and unstable.
If I were to make this story into a movie, I would choose Samuel L. Jackson as the main character, and Garfield as the cat. The wife would most definitely have to be Jessica Alba. I would take out the ending, and save it as part of the sequel. Parts I would add, are sub-plots, and more characters. Samuel L Jackson would be a good person to play the guy, because he can swear really good.

A Book Everyone Should Read

A book that I think everyone should read, is a little book called, A Million Little Pieces. It is a book written by James Frey, that's about his struggle with drugs and alcohol. The book starts off with James on an airplane, having no recollection of how he got there, and no idea of how his injuries occurred. When he lands, he is assisted by flight attendants to meet his parents. His parents then send James to a rehab clinic, and that's where most the book takes place. While in the clinic, James goes through many challenges, but in the end turns his life around for the better. Everyone should read this book, because it's very inspiring. Following James life of struggle and pain, and watching him overcome those struggles and pains, gives the reader a satisfied feeling, which you can find out when you read the book.

Someone I Know

So every morning, my most wonderful friend (no homo) Erik gives me a joke or riddle. The jokes and stuff are pretty good, but I think the funniest one so far was this one......
